Review: This gym is a bit tricky to find, but trust Google maps and follow the narrow alleys it leads you through. It's very hidden away. If you're lost, just ask the locals, it seemed like everyone knew the gym as the island is very small.

It is probably the smallest gym with the most equipment squeezed inside that we've ever seen. It is not much bigger than your standard living room but has it all: benches, cables, dumbbells, smith machines...and even air conditioning! It was not what you would expect from a gym in a place as small as Gili Air. All in all, pretty impressive.

There are no lockers at this gym but it's so small you can just put your stuff in a corner and have an eye on it. It is likely that you will be the only one in there anyway. There is a basic squat toilet behind the gym if you must go but don't expect it to be pretty.

Some of the equipment:

Dumbbells up to 30kg
Smith machine
Cables
Adjustable Benches
Barbell bench press
Pec Dec
Dips bar
Preacher curl & EZ bar
Lat pull-down
Leg press
Leg extension & curl
Bars and plates
Low row cable

Their sound system is great, bring your phone and you can plug it into the big speakers. Or bring your own speakers, whichever you prefer. There is no water dispenser so bring plenty of water or buy it there. They also sell awesome shakes: Protein smoothies or normal smoothies, or bring your own protein and mix it in a smoothie, they make all kinds of shakes for you. Costs around IDR 45,000.

We were seriously impressed by the tiny gym which had it all. We probably wouldn't recommend a brutal leg day in there as there is no squat rack or enough space for deadlifts etc. But if you're after any upper body workout this is the place to be.
Make sure you try the almond & peanut butter smoothie!

Who is this gym for? We were the only foreigners and girls during our workouts, but we saw some other tourists and locals in the evening when we cruised past it. During our morning workouts (usually around 10am) we had the gym pretty much to ourselves, apart from a few locals hanging around outside. They were friendly and kept watching us - probably because we were out of fresh clothes and had to train without shirts. We never felt uncomfortable though, we'd say this is a good place for anyone to get a good workout in.

Tip: Ask for you smoothie before you're done with your workout so you don't have to wait for it.

  1. What an amazing idea for a blog! Also, this place totally looks like a really chill beach bar from the outside. Surprisingly nice set up inside. Good find :)
