The 5 best supplements for backpackers

1) Protein powder

Preferably a blend of slow and long release, because you won't have space to pack isolate and casein. This also means you can keep a constant supply of protein throughout the day and night. Check out this one from My Protein

2)  L-Glutamine

This amino acid is known to help minimise catabolic muscle loss, which is perfect for helping to keep ahold of your gains whilst backpacking. Get it here.

3) Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA)

If you are reading this, you know what BCAAs are. When you are on the road, there is no day off after leg day. Huge arms workout? You may still have to canoe the next day or go climbing.  BCAA’s are good for backpackers, because they help reduce muscle soreness after workouts and help build new muscle. Thats why you take them at home and why you should keep this up on the road. Get them here.

4) Rehydration sachets

When you are walking around in the heat all day hard, or climing upto view points, it can be hard to keep hydrated. Rehydration sachets are cheap and light and a perfect way keep your hydration levels up.

Try brands such as dioralyte or Royal D

5) Beta alanine

I must confess that I love Beta Alanine. Getting ruined on the old Jac3d formula was pretty much what got me into lifting. BA is great as a pre-workout on it own, or you can add to a   drink for the extra boost. Taking BA can increase muscular endurance and performance.  Only need a small amount per dose, about 0.8g twice a day, and will help in the gym, but also in the rest of activities such as hiking, climbing or climbing all those stairs to the Tiger Temple. Get some here.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION

If you can only take one thing, then you might want to give consideration to getting Hurricane Extreme.

Hurricane Extreme contains a blend of protein, carbohydrates, branch chain amino acids (BCAA’s), Creatine Monohydrate (Creapure®), Beta Alanine, Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate (AAKG), Leucine and Glutamine Peptides. All these ingredients are provided together to provide a convenient recovery shake which can be consumed immediately after your training sessions.

The benefit of this is that you only have to carry one powder with you, whilst still getting the benefit of almost everything in the list. Grab it here.
