Review: Having had an amazing few days in Ubud, we made our way down to the southwest corner of Bali, to check out some of the islands most amazing beaches. Staying in a beautiful villa complex, we spent the morning on the beach and the afternoon lazing around the pool. Bali truly is a beautiful place, I mean who wouldn't want to spend the day here?

After an afternoon of relaxing by the pool it was time to hit the gym. Having searched for gyms in Uluwatu, I managed to locate one about 15 minutes away from where we were staying, called Kayana Gym. The lovely owner of our hotel lent me his moped for a couple of hours and I hit the road in search of a workout.

Kayana Gym is one year old and is owned by Mr Wayan Susanta. Its a large gym, with glass walls creating an airy space in which to work out. The gym offers day passes for 20,000 IDR or a months membership for 100,000 IDR. There are no contracts here, so if you are going to be in Uluwatu for more than a few days it might work out cheaper to buy the months membership.

This gym is pretty well equipped and has both cardio equipment and a decent selection of weights. The machines and weights are all pretty new and in good working order. The cardio machines look out of the front window of the gym meaning you can look off into the jungle whilst you warm up or do whatever it is you cardio bunnies do. Check out the view!

Equipment wise, this gym has:
  • Dumbbells up to 20kg
  • Adjustable benches
  • Flat barbell bench
  • Olympic bars
  • Preacher curl bench
  • Easy bar
  • Cables
  • Smith machine
  • Pull up bars
  • Leg press machine
  • Chest press machine
  • Lat pull down
  • Seated low row
  • Treadmill
  • Cross trainer
  • Static bike
  • Punch bag
As well as the gym equipment, the gym also has fans, free sweat towels and decent music. The equipment is spread out meaning there is plenty of space to train, or use the punch bag which is located in the centre of the gym.

The gym sells cold drinks for  5,000 IDR, and amino acid tablets for 5,000 IDR. As well as the gym, there is also a small restaurant cart put front, so you can grab a post workout snack if you want one. You can even buy a gym t-shirt to remember your workout if you want!

Who is this gym for? Whilst I was training here there were both locals and tourists of both sexes training in this gym. The atmosphere here was professional, the gym was clean and the locals were friendly. Due to the proximity to the beach, the gym attracts a lot of tourists. As a result, I would recommend this gym to everyone looking to work out in Uluwatu.

Tips: The gym is in a somewhat isolated location, so unless you are staying within walking distance you will need to rent a moped to get to this gym. If you are going to rent a moped, you should read my guide to renting and riding moped in Asia on my travel blog Quit.Pack.Go
