Review: Having arrived on Koh Tao and spent the day on the beach, I set about trying to find a gym. Gym and Fitness seem to have spent a fair bit of time putting posters up around the island, so it seemed like the logical choice to train. Also, googled showed me that it was the only gym on the island, so that made it a pretty easy choice.
Having hired a moped and driven to the gym, which was very easy to find, I was pleasantly surprised to find a cave like gym full of proper weights on the lower floor, perfect for a heavyweight workout.
Gym and fitness is open from 7.30am to 10pm on weekdays, and 8am to 9pm on weekends and I paid 200 bhat for entrance on a day pass. There are other plans available for week or month passes if you will be in Koh Tao for more than a few days (See below for prices).
The gym offers a free bottle of water with the day pass and a sweat towel, which you will need as the gym is not air conditioned.
Gym and Fitness is an almost western standard gym that also offers Muay Thai lessons, as well as classes and personal training. The gym has good a selection of gloves, focus pads and punch bags for its kickboxing lessons and a padded training area upstairs. All of the equipment looked new and in a good condition. See below for a photo showing the prices of Muay Thai training.
The gym has a cardio room upstairs, which is open sided and has fans at each machine to help you keep cool. The cardio area has running, cross training and cycling machines and is pretty standard.
It is the downstairs that is really fun. This is the weights area and the whole place has a cave like feel to it. This is another gym where shirtless training is officially allowed, so except topless guys wandering around.
Gym and Fitness also sell protein shakes and allows you to pick what ingredients and extras you want. This gym has the widest selection of flavours of protein that I had seen on my travels. Also you can try their banana and goji berry protein bars. (See below for the price list.) It also sells things like pre-workout and amino acids. There are also lockers for you to leave your stuff and plenty of parking for bikes and cars outside.
This gym has:
- Dumbbells up to 50kg
- Flat Barbell bench
- Incline bar bell bench
- Decline Barbell bench
- Leg extension
- Leg curl
- Leg press
- Dips / pull up bar
- Adjustable Benches
- Cables
- Chains
- Lat pull-down
- Low row
- Swiss ball
- Skipping rope
- Medicine ball
- Jump box
- TRX
- Yoga mats
Who is this gym for? As with Star Gym in Koa Samui, this is another shirtless training gym so you may wish to avoid the weights area if not your thing (http://travelgyms.blogspot.co.id/2016/09/thailand-star-gym-chewang-beach-koh.html).
However, everyone was fully clothed in the cardio upstairs, so this shouldn't be an issue if you just want to train cardio or abs. I saw tourists and locals of both sexes training here, and the atmosphere was friendly.
Tip: Gym and Fitness sells shaker bottles which are hard to find generally. If you are planning on buying protein powder, or mixing your own pre-workout you may want to get one here!
